Police in Westmoreland have confirmed that a woman who was rescued in critical condition from a house in Cornwall Mountain has died from her injuries.
She has been identified as Natalee Gordon of Whitehouse.
Investigators say Gordon was burnt, beaten and tortured by her ex-boyfriend, 43-year-old welder Collin James, who was arrested last week.
Residents reportedly alerted the police after Gordon had not been seen for several days. Officers forced entry into the locked house and found her badly injured. She was taken to hospital, where she later died.
James is now expected to face murder charges, pending the outcome of a post-mortem examination.
Several residents in Cornwall Mountain told CVM News that they were aware Gordon was being abused but said they were afraid to intervene, claiming James had threatened their lives and those of their families.
Community leaders and residents have condemned the incident and are renewing calls for stronger action to address domestic violence.
