In a bid to control crime in Mount Salem, St. James, the construction of a police station was undertaken as part of the build phase of the Zone of Special Operations (ZOZOS) now in place in the community.
It was also done as part of the Ministry of National Security’s Rebuild, Overhaul and Construct (ROC) project.
The project involves the rebuilding, renovating, and retrofitting of police facilities across the island.
While speaking at the opening of the Mount Salem police station, Prime Minister Andrew Holness says the investment in upgrading police stations is imperative.
Holness says, the plans being executed by the Government are to bring about long-term sustainable solutions, which is the ideal route to take.
He adds, the poor conditions of the stations reflect poorly on how the officers, in general, are regarded.
Meantime, Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson says, this police station also has additional sections to bolster efficiency.
He notes the center investigates allegations of sexual offences and child abuse CISOCA, and a hospital has been added to the facility.
