A joint police-military team and the Municipal Police in Montego Bay St. James on Friday, July 30 to carry out a major operation to deter illegal vending in the vicinity of the Charles Gordon Market.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Clifford Chambers says the police will be adopting a zero tolerance approach to the matter of illegal and unauthorized vending outside the market area in Montego Bay, St. James. He says a congested market district may encourage criminal elements. Many traffic infractions were also highlighted in addition to a Ganja seizure.
The authorities insist that enough space is inside the market to accommodate all the vendors who continue to sell on the outside. However, one vendor who says she has been operating for over 20 years in the space finds it hard to move.
This is in an effort to ramp up law and order in the downtown area of the resort town. Illegal and unauthorized vending has been a longstanding problem in the area. Additionally, a large quantity of Marijuana was also seized in the space today.
