In a bid to ease pressure on the already burdened public health system, construction has begun for another field hospital at the University Hospital of West Indies, (UHWI). The initiative is being spearheaded by the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica, (PSOJ).
Some stakeholders toured sections of University Hospital on Friday, September 10. At the where a field hospital was being constructed to provide additional assistance for persons infected with COVID-19.
Dr. Carl Bruce, consultant neurosurgeon and Medical Chief of staff at UWI, says this site began construction exactly one week ago. Dr. Bruce notes the private sector organization has been very supportive in this development project. He expressed his gratitude to the PSOJ and the other stakeholders who have partnered with the hospital to help the constructing the field hospital. He noted that the hospital is currently treating both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients and this will assist with their patient numbers.
He says the groundbreaking was carried out prior to laying the foundation on Friday, in which they were assisted by members of the Jamaica Defense Force, (JDF). Dr. Bruce encouraged anyone who would like to assist in the project to do so by liaising with the PSOJ.
