Nearly every minority member of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) Building Committee today resigned with immediate effect. Their resignation follows growing concerns about allegations of corruption dogging the building watchdog as well as alleged exclusion by the mayor on critical issues. Minority leader and ranking member of the committee, Councillor Andrew Swaby told CVM Live, the resignations took immediate effect with eleven of twelve members affirming the move.
This shortly after the Mayor, Delroy Williams made his presentation on sweeping changes to the building approval process in the KSAMC. Among the changes interrogation of the approval process from initial stage to point of issuance of strata title, an overhaul of the planning department to better respond to demand. The mayor also suggested, the Chief Engineer now has to submit a detailed list of all building works across the municipality on the last working day of each month, while insisting there will be mandatory inspections every three months on every development.
Plans which the minority leader says were taken from them by the mayor and presented as his own. He went further. Meantime the mayor has fired back at the minority member’s resignation from the committee.
