On Thursday, during the Ceremonial Opening of Parliament, the Governor General’s throne speech highlighted law reforms, health care, education, and housing as the big-ticket items for the government this fiscal year. However, for a second year, the ceremonial opening of parliament has fallen victim to the COVID-19 pandemic; only a fraction of both houses of parliament appeared physically.
It was more than just the fashion, the bands, and protocols on display, more than former Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) MP George Wright walking with the opposition People’s National Party (PNP) members – the Ceremonial Opening of Parliament proved COVID-19 compliant, and less crowded than previous years.
