Following a spate of murders of women to start the New Year, a comprehensive examination of the nature and prevalence of violence against women and girls in Jamaica is of utmost importance.
The historic and recent abuse of the nation’s women at the hands of intimate partners is multidimensional and involves physical, emotional and economic abuse and in 2017 led Jamaica to become the second-highest ranked nation in terms of female homicides in the world.
To examine the deep-rooted gender inequality and damaging stereotypes of women as weaker and less valuable members of society we are joined by Nastassia Robinson, Legal Officer for Jamaicans for Justice, Dr. Herbert Gayle, Social Anthropologist, and John Bassie, Chairman of the Dispute Resolution Foundation.
