The Irwin Primary School has been plagued by theft and infestation since the school closed its doors in March 2020. Our news team visited the institution and spoke with the principal who says criminals continue to impact the lives of students. Like most schools in Jamaica, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Irwin Primary School in St James closed its doors to traditional learning. However, that was no deterrent for thieves who plagued the school resulting in several break-ins over the period.
Principal Kingsley Bailey bemoans the constant theft. The institution which caters to some 822 students re-opened on a phased basis with only students from grades 5 and 6 present on Monday. Mr. Bailey notes the past student associations in the process of assisting the school to replace some of the stolen items. A report was also filed to the security and safety officer in the Security Ministry.
The school’s also been targeted by other critters, resulting in damage to the few pieces of furniture the criminals have left.
