The opposition is continuing its call for the government to revisit budget 2022/23, which it deems woefully inadequate to address the current crisis. The People’s National Party (PNP) Leader Mark Golding says as prices continue to increase, the government must capitalize on areas conducive to making the lives of Jamaicans better. He was speaking at the Party’s Post-budget Debate on Wednesday.
With the government set to collect 99 billion dollars in taxes in the upcoming fiscal year along with the ongoing war with Ukraine and Russia, the opposition leader Golding is suggesting the government examine ways in which the cost of living can be ameliorated. One aspect highlighted was student loans – He notes while the Student Loan Bureau has made provisions for students, the government should provide a waiver.
Agriculture was also addressed noting this is an avenue many Jamaicans make their lively-hood. He suggests subsidiaries be implemented and be monitored by the Agriculture Ministry and the consumer affairs, rather than opening up to imports from overseas. He also calls for tighter measures regarding praedial larceny. More details below:
