The state visit by Rwandan President Paul Kagame to Jamaica promises growth across many sectors. Rwanda is dubbed by some as “the number one country for women in politics” with approximately 61 percent of the lower house of representatives being women.
Though Jamaica has the highest ever proportion of female representatives in politics Prime Minister Andrew Holness acknowledged that there is still more work to do. When asked how Jamaica could increase female representation in politics, the Rwandan President shared what his government did, beginning with a review of legislation. The next step would be to ensure implementation through monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.
