Sixty-one (61) uncertified Early Childhood Institutions (ECIs) are at risk of closure following a report submitted to the Ministry of Education (MOE) by the Early Childhood Commission (ECC). As it awaits a response from Education Minister, Fayvall Williams, Chairman of the ECC Board David Salmon urges ECIs to get certified.
Mr. Salmon was presenting findings from the ECC report which assessed institutions across Jamaica. Against the 231 legal criteria of the ECC, Region 2 which comprises Portland, St Mary, and St Thomas shows the lowest inspection scores with 77 percent of schools falling below inspection standards.
Among its recommendations is the need to improve physical infrastructure. 2022 has been declared the “year of early childhood development”, however, 61 institutions could face closure if they fail to meet the stipulated standard. More details in the report below:
