Jamaica is experiencing the 5th wave of COVID-19 infections. The official confirmation came from Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton during a virtual COVID Conversation on Wednesday morning. He says the inflection point for the 5th wave occurred around April 20, adding that the latest wave is likely due to the Omicron BA.2 sub-variants.
Dr. Tufton is urging Jamaicans to remain calm and responsible, citing differences such as less severe illnesses, deaths, and hospitalizations compared to previous waves.
The country recorded 147 new cases of the virus on Tuesday with a positivity rate of 17. 6 per cent. National Epidemiologist Karen Webster Kerr notes the country’s vaccination coverage is still too low to have a good effect on the transmission of the virus.
