The Ministry of Local Government received some flak from Shadow Minister on Local Government Denise Daley during her contribution to the sectoral debate earlier this week.
She highlighted the ineffectiveness of the government, lack of proper infrastructure and made recommendations she believes will alleviate the ongoing garbage issues. Speaking during the sectoral debate on Wednesday, Shadow Minister Denise Daley sought to criticize the government on their short comings regarding proper garbage disposal.
Delays in provision of adequate infrastructure to accommodate Jamaica’s growing waste issues, was primary among her concerns. Recommendations were also made for the clearing of holding stations across the island, noting that they should not hold garbage exceeding five days.
Daley also alluded to the promise of 100 trucks that were to be provided by the government, stating that only half of that number have entered the fleet. The shadow minister also noted the frustration of some municipalities leading them to purchase their own trucks. However, when the opposition spokesperson raised the issue of frequent fires at dumps, especially the Riverton landfill, Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie was swift to interrupt.
