In yet another expression of dissatisfaction, district constables are appealing for better work conditions, and benefits. As an important branch of policing, the members are demanding to be properly reimbursed for the services they provide. Members of the District Constable concerned with community patrolling and policing, say they are dissatisfied with how they are being compensated.
The issue was addressed at the united district constable association’s 42nd anniversary, under the theme “demonstrating a shared vision”. As an extension of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the members say over the years, they have been denied several benefits, and are displeased with how they are being treated. First vice-president of the District Constable Association, Karen Wilson says they are plagued with mounting disadvantages. This comes on the heels of the Minister of National Security, Dr. Horace Chang, saying the crime rate in the country could be reduced if the police were prioritized in receiving proper resources.
Corporal of Police and Chairman of the Jamaica Police Federation Rohan James mirrors the sentiments made by Dr. Chang, and adds that the district constable is the sole auxiliary force that now exists, and its members need to be properly remunerated. He says while the workers might be discouraged, they shouldn’t be daunted, because they have the continued support of the police federation.
