Opposition Spokesperson on Health, Dr Morais Guy is calling on the government to improve contact tracing to contain the spread of the Monkeypox virus. He expressed disappointment at the government’s seemingly reactive response to the viral threat.

The Health Ministry declared that patient zero, who presented with symptoms on July 5 after traveling to the UK, is in isolation and contact tracing has begun. Opposition Spokesperson on Health, Dr Morais Guy says while the arrival of the virus in Jamaica was inevitable, thorough contact tracing is key to prevent spread.

Dr Guy explains that a person can be contagious long before they display symptoms. As early as May, Dr. Guy implored the government to take preventative measures in anticipation of the virus spreading to Jamaica.  Now that it’s a reality he expresses disappointment at what he calls the government’s unpreparedness.

He assures the public that there is no need for panic but rather the utilization of hand washing, physical distancing, mask-wearing, and vigilance. Watch the full report here:
