August 1, marks over 180 years since slaves in Jamaica were freed in 1838. Government officials addressed the nation in their Emancipation Day messages highlighting modern challenges such as crime.
In addressing the nation for Emancipation Day 2022 Prime Minister Andrew Holness says the journey to freedom for the slaves in 1838 was a monumental one, as many have died fighting. Following Emancipation, workers on the plantations were still being treated unfairly, Mr Holness alluded to the genesis of the Morant Bay Rebellion led by Paul Bogle and George William Gordon, highlighting their stance against injustice.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Mark Golding echoed the call for Jamaicans to emancipate themselves from the shackles of mental slavery. Watch the full report:
