Minister of National Security Dr. Horace Chang announced the new Firearm Act, which passed in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, welcoming a range of penalties for those found with an illegal firearm, ranging from 15 years to life imprisonment. The National Security Minister says this major legislation will be used against persons apprehended and charged with any of the identified criminal breaches of the Act. Minister Chang adds that despite the questions being raised, he believes it is necessary as a deterrent against armed criminals.
Minister Chang notes the regime dealing with a licensed firearm is different from that of an illegal firearm. He that the government is making every effort to provide the police with the tools required to properly fight crime. This includes the provision of proper infrastructure, with ongoing adjustments to the legislative framework. Watch the report below:
