Several stakeholders including the Jamaica Employers’ Federation (JEF) fear that the pending adjustment to the national minimum wage is likely to impact small businesses, reducing the employment rates for low-wage earners.
Come June 1 the national minimum wage will increase by forty-four percent. Following changes implemented to the minimum wage, the President of JEF David Wan, says it has the potential of impacting small and rural businesses that have insufficient resources to compensate employees
Noting each industry is different, wan says the steep increase expected at four thousand dollars more than the current nine thousand dollars for a forty-hour work week will impact many employers lauding the leap made by the government to improve salaries for minimum wage earners wan explains the possibilities of future job losses for employees remain uncertain.
