A large percentage of Jamaican women are engaging in transactional sex, a practice that has seen even women in committed relationships demanding more from their partners for status or gain. These are the findings from a recent study, conducted by researchers at the Northern Caribbean University (NCU), to see if there is a relationship between social media and the shifting reality.
These were the findings of a 2022 study by researchers at NCU who found, the transaction transcends money and pleasure to now include status and other material gains. The study, which sampled some1,123 women primarily from Kingston, St Andrew, and St Catherine, indicates 11 per cent of women enjoy transactional sex, while over 14 per cent have never done it, but would try it.
Of the sampled group, over 75 per cent believe social media is influencing transactional sex, but Bourne is of a different view; he also adds, with married women and women in committed relationships partaking in transactional sex and having multiple sexual partners, there may subsequently be an increase in domestic violence.
