The Jamaican government’s decision on Tuesday to extend the tenure of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) by an additional two years is being viewed by the Opposition, People’s National Party (PNP), as an attempt to manipulate the outcome of pending investigations. This assumption is based on the recent revelation by the Integrity Commission, which is currently investigating several parliamentarians for illicit enrichment. The amendment, aimed at increasing the retirement age for the DPP and Auditor General from 60 to 65, received support from 39 government members.
The PNP, however, insists that the government is using its majority power to force its way through Jamaica’s constitution, without consulting the opposition or the Constitutional Reform Committee. Senator Donna Scott-Motley, a member of the CRC, further adds that the government’s decision could potentially compromise the independence and impartiality of the DPP’s office. Watch the report:
