A spokesperson from one of the largest teachers’ associations in America has announced that their union intends to join forces with the Jamaica Teacher’s Association to ensure that all teachers receive the promises made by the Jamaican government. This comes as the JTA expresses ongoing concerns ahead of the upcoming school year, scheduled to begin on September 4.
The American Federation of Teachers, AFT, has committed to stand in solidarity with the Jamaica Teacher’s Association, aiming to hold the government accountable for fulfilling its commitments to the country’s educators. Speaking on the opening day of the 59th Annual JTA Conference on Monday, Dr. Fredrick Ingram, the representative of AFT, accused the Jamaican government of mistreating and neglecting the needs of teachers. He suggested that the Jamaican government is actively trying to undermine the teachers’ union and disregard the rights of workers. Despite this, Dr. Ingram emphasized that the notion of better opportunities in America is not entirely accurate, as the unfortunate reality is quite similar.
