With just under two weeks remaining in the hurricane season, some farmers, who had been relieved after drought conditions dissipated, are now grappling with the aftermath of persistent rainfall turning blessings into sorrows.
Lenworth Fulton, President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society, JAS, highlights that farmers have incurred significant losses of produce they had relied upon to meet market demands, especially with the impending Christmas season. The most affected areas include St. Andrew, St. Thomas, Clarendon, and St. Elizabeth. Despite the Rural Agricultural Development Authority’s (RADA) previous indication that prices of fresh produce, which had soared by over 400 percent in some cases, might trend downward by Christmas, the recent flooding-induced losses for farmers are now prompting consumers to prepare for a potential rise in prices.
