What life will be like after the Covid-19 pandemic is a question being contemplated by many leaders as well as citizens. Job and wage cuts due to the first wave of Covid-19 infections in the island has left many crushed, with dwindling means to support themselves and others. For now, groups such as the PSOJ’s Covid-19 response fund are trying to assist those who are at a disadvantage…helping them to survive one day at a time.
“Our seniors are particularly struggling. As you know CVSS has a number of member organizations who are in the field carrying out work to support the elderly, children…diverse range of vulnerable persons and we do recognise that their inability to be out and about is affecting the elderly,” says Shelly-Ann Lawson Francis, Executive Director for the Council of Voluntary Social Services.
Over the past several weeks, distributions were made in several communities, areas identified by Mona Geoinformatics
The Executive Director of CVSS believes that it is critical that companies from the public and private sector unite in providing aid to vulnerable citizens through food packages and other necessities.
“We are appealing to Jamaicans at this time – we know it’s hard for everyone but if you can fund a way to contribute to what we are doing here, it will make a big difference,” Lawson Francis adds.
The most recent packaging of goods and distribution was supported by CARIMED Ltd and Kirk-FP limited. The PSOJ Covid-19 response fund has raised over $154 million dollars of it’s a 250 million dollar goal.
