Youth Participation – The participation of young people in a functioning democracy is vital. Their role can determine opportunities for growth, substantial policy change, and give rise to more liberal ideologies. With the General Election less than 24 hours away, CVM Live engaged a panel of youth analysts for their thoughts on Jamaica’s political culture.
It’s fair to say that young people are less interested in national political issues, however there are factors that may influence political apathy. Digital Marketer, Joel Nomdarkham believes that a constituency manifesto could be game-changing. While Melissa is of the opinion that more young people are participating in political discussions. This is due in part to politicians exploring social platforms and using digital technology to communicate.
The panelists are suggesting the introduction of a protest vote, a show of dissatisfaction with the current political system. The group believes that engaging more qualified and competent young people in the political field may shape the future of the country’s democracy.
