Call for Opposition to Remain – The anti-corruption watchdog agency, National Integrity Action (NIA) has taken issue with the government’s decision to retake chairmanship of four key parliamentary committees.
Executive Director, Professor Trevor Munroe says the practice of the opposition chairing these oversight committees should be retained as they play an important role in holding the government to account.
Opposition members have been chairing parliamentary oversight committees for over thirteen years, a protocol initiated by former Prime Minister Bruce Golding in 2007.
However, the Andrew Holness led administration is taking action on the basis that the opposition has been neglecting their responsibilities.
