The farming plot in Colbeck, St. Catherine has been officially declared an irrigation area, this following the Senate’s approval on Friday, November 13, 2020 .
The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Floyd Green, had in October, declared Colbeck an irrigation area in an effort to expand the regions in which farmers have access to irrigation water.
Farm Plot in Colbeck officially an irrigation area: The Colbeck Irrigation Scheme dates back to 2011, when the system was first introduced to the community by the National Irrigation Commission.
The scheme involves 95 farm lots on 110 hectares of land occupied predominantly by small vegetable farmers.
Opposition Senator Lambert Brown in support of the order suggests that the Government find a way to harness the volumes of heavy rains that have recently impacted agricultural production, leaving farmers devastated.
Another matter was raised by Government Senator, Don Webhy.
The Upper House also approved the amendment of the Electricity Regulations Act which will according to the Energy, Science and Technology Minister, Daryl Vaz, facilitate the modernisation and efficiency of the electricity sector; increase compliance and industry safety while increasing Jamaica’s global competitiveness.
