Accommodations made to train more Special Ed. Teachers: COVID-19 has shed light on the importance of the educational system. It has also highlighted the downside people with disabilities experience with the lack of face to face interaction.
The Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College which is one of the three colleges that trains special education teachers will be collaborating with the University of the West Indies.
This collaboration will offer a Master’s degree for educators specializing in special and inclusive education come 2021. Founder and Director of Adonijah Group of Schools, Ruthlyn James says special education is more dynamic than chalk and blackboard teaching.
Principal of the college Lorna Gow-Morrision says the college’s diagnostic and intervention centre will also provide a weekly one hour virtual session which focuses on providing psycho-social support for students attending primary schools within the region.
Additionally, the Community Based Rehabilitation Jamaica (CBRJ), will now be providing support for children in western Jamaica with physical disabilities.
