Cervical Disc Disease

Cervical disc disease is a condition that occurs when the natural shock absorbers in the body become worn and start to degenerate. It affects the spaces between the vertebrae narrowing the nerve roots causing them to become pinched. The cervical spine in the neck is made up of seven bones called vertebrae, which are separated by discs filled with a cushioning gel-like substance. The cervical discs both stabilize your neck and allow it to turn smoothly from side to side and bend forward to back. However, cervical disc disease goes beyond just pain in the neck. The degenerative process can cause radiating pain, as well as numbness and weakness in your shoulders, arm, and hand. That discomfort and loss of mobility can have a major impact on your career, family, and quality of life. Consultant Neurological Surgeon, Dr. Roger Hunter joined us on Sunrise to share more about the disease.
