The prostate is a gland that produces some of the fluid that carries sperm during ejaculation. The urethra, the tube via which urine exits the body, is encircled by the prostate gland. The gland has expanded if the prostate is enlarged. Almost all men have prostate enlargement as they age. It is unclear what causes prostate enlargement. However, factors such as ageing and changes in the cells of the testicles cause the growth of the gland, as well as testosterone levels. Integrative Oncologist, Dr Andre Williams joined us on Sunrise to help us understand this condition. Watch the interview below to find out more:
Symptoms of an enlargened prostate include dribbling at the end of urinating, urinary retention, inability to empty your bladder, blood in urine, weak urine stream and straining to urinate. A digital rectal exam is performed to feel the prostate gland. Other tests such as a urine flow rate exam, urine analysis, urine culture, blood urea nitrogen and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) may also be performed.
