The Institute for Gender and Development Studies at the University of the West Indies recently hosted a Ring Road March in commemoration of their 16 Days of Activism campaign. Every year, from November 25 to December 10, the 16 Days of Activism campaign calls for action against one of the world’s most persistent violations of human rights which is violence against women. This year was no different as the campaign was launched under the theme “Ending Femicide”.
In Jamaica, 1 in every 4 Jamaican women has been physically abused by a partner at some point in her life. Similarly, 1 in every 3 Jamaican women has been a victim of sexual violence. The annual observance of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (IDEVAW) and the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence remain vital considering the statistics.
