World Food Day was celebrated on October 20, which focused on the millions of people worldwide who cannot afford a healthy diet or have regular access to nutritious meals. Jamaica too has joined the world in observing the day. The local celebrations featured a National Ceremony and Exhibition at the Vere Technical High School in Clarendon.
The celebration was a collaborative initiative between the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations under the theme ‘Leave No one Behind, Better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life for all’.
Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Pearnel Charles Jr notes that the Government of Jamaica is working to promote increased access in the sector, through the Production Incentive Programme, and the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA). In addition to that, the Government has integrated an element of the National Grow Smart Eat Smart Programme in schools.
