The Portmore City Municipality has planned an ‘Outta Road School & Community Outreach Tour’ to increase awareness about natural disasters and encourage readiness. Portmore is the largest coastal urban area in St Catherine, located approximately 15 miles east of the capital city of Kingston. It is exposed to several geological and hydro-meteorological risks, particularly earthquakes and hurricanes, due to a combination of physiographic/climatic conditions and vulnerability factors. The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has endorsed this initiative as its aim is to sensitize the general public about preparedness tips and resources available for mitigation, planning and response to a disaster. Deputy Mayor of the Portmore City Municipality, Alrick Campbell, shares more about the project.
