Pelvic floor therapy is a treatment approach that uses the principles of physical therapy to provide a structured, effective and safe reconditioning of pelvic floor muscles. The purpose of therapy is to reduce pain, muscle weakness, and dysfunction while increasing the power and efficiency of the pelvic floor muscles. In order to increase the muscles’ strength and functionality during therapy, a qualified physical therapist accesses them through the rectum or vagina. If the muscles are short and contracted, the therapist may stretch them; if the muscles are weak and dysfunctional, the therapist may use resistance to build power. In this interview, Physiotherapist, Dr Savion Francis explains more about pelvic floor physiotherapy. Watch it below.
