Amniotic band syndrome, also known as constriction ring syndrome, happens when fibrous bands of the amniotic sac (the lining inside the uterus that contains a fetus) get tangled around a developing fetus. (Source: Boston Children’s Hospital) This portion of pregnancy health is necessary knowledge.
Dr.Talianne Titus, Obstetrician Gynecologist and Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist at Amethyst Centre explains the effects of Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS). She likened the syndrome to that of being constricted by elastic bands, causing indentation to the affected limbs. Severe cases of Amniotic Band Syndrome may compromise said limbs and result in auto-amputation.
Getting regular check-ups is key for early detection. Some signs are laboured movement as well as swelling. The position of these bands cannot be predetermined hence, bands can be formed anywhere on the fetus.
Amniotic Band Syndrome is not easily treatable based on the severity of the diagnosis. Currently, local surgery for ABS is not available hence; adequate counseling is necessary for mothers who deliver babies with ABS.
