What is Lasik surgery? This is a eye surgery is commonly performed as laser refractive surgery to correct vision problems. The surgery is usually done to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The surgery is geared toward reshaping the cornea. The procedure begins with the creation of a thin flap to access the underlying cornea (stroma). After which a laser is used to reshape the stroma through an ultraviolet light beam. Lasik surgery is a very effective procedure that has been performed for more than twenty years. But what are the pro and cons of Lasik surgery?
Ophthalmologist, Dr. Maynard Mcintosh share more about Lasik eye surgery as well as the pros and cons on Sunrise. Watch it here:
The surgery is typically safe with a quick recovery time, however, there are risks associated with the surgery like any other. Some of the risks include side effects or potential complications from surgery. Pros of Lasik surgery include safety and effectiveness, quick recovery time, and no more glasses or contact lenses. Cons of the surgery include side effects from medication (eye drops, glare and halos), and surgery complications (under-corrections, over-corrections, astigmatism and flap problems).
A suitable candidate for the procedure requires several criteria and a full discussion with an optometrist. Factors for consideration include the thickness of the cornea, the candidate’s current prescription, medical history and whether the candidate’s vision is significantly changing.
