‘The Sound of Waves’ by Sandrene Jackson-Douglas

The Sound of Waves is a novel that takes readers on a journey with a thirteen-year-old boy, called Benjamin as he navigates his way through an inclusive school, being the only deaf student. He is constantly bullied and ridiculed for his inability to hear without his hearing aids. He is also faced with a twofold challenge of coping with speech delay and being socially isolated from his peers. The novel explores themes of friendship, growth, identity, adversity, empathy, courage, prejudice and family, among others. It also features other underlying themes such as facing inner fears to achieve personal growth despite challenges.
