‘Whose Signature is it Anyway’ by Beverley East

Beverley East has practiced the science of forensic document examination for over thirty (30) years in the United States, United Kingdom, Jamaica and other countries. She has worked on many cases offering handwriting identification such as verifying the authenticity of signatures, claims for fraud and malpractice in relation to checks, wills, contracts and medical records. Recently, East participated in a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) handwriting identification research study from July 2019- May 2020. She was also the expert featured on an Emmy-nominated episode of “The America Hidden Stories”. East is no stranger to the creative industry as she is also a writer. Her first book ‘Finding Mr. Write’ is a new angle on selecting the perfect mate. Her newest book ‘Whose Signature is it Anyway’ by Beverley East, on the complexities of Caribbean fraud is a game changer. It is the first textbook published that addresses fraud from a uniquely Caribbean perspective.

Certified Forensic Document Examiner, Beverley East shares more about her new book ‘Whose Signature is it Anyway’ on Sunrise. Watch the interview here:

As an experienced handwriting expert, she has examined many will and testament fraud cases winning in the Supreme Court in Kingston, Jamaica, the High Court of Trinidad & Tobago, and the Washington DC Courts. A high-profile examination in the United States resulted in a $4.5 million win for a lawyer from Troutman & Saunders for authenticating the 18th-century explorer Alfred Wallace’s 1,700-item collection for the Smithsonian.

Locally, East was a part of the team investigating the “Manchester Municipal $400 million Fraud Scheme” in 2020.  This yielded significant results as the group involved was found guilty in 2020. Her opinion has been sought after for major media landmark cases such as the Jon Benet Ramsey investigation. Her opinion on the Anthrax letters was included in the National Geographic television documentary, which aired internationally in September 2009.

East has lectured at major universities such as Bowie State University and John Jay College of Criminal Justice. She has also provided ‘Question Document Training’ seminars for lawyers through several local banks including Jamaica Money Market Brokers, Jamaica National Building Society, Sagicor and Jamaica Financial Institute Services. The accredited seminar is for lawyers through the General Legal Council.
