Is Sixth Form A Step In the Right Direction?

The Education Ministry recently announced that in September 2022 high school students who are completing fifth form will have to complete Sixth Form – an additional two years of post-secondary education to better prepare for higher education and or the workforce. Many individuals have already started to criticise this decision and so we ask, is this a step in the right direction?

Many tertiary organizations in Jamaica, requires that their students or prospective students need at least five Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) subject passes between grades one and three to register and advance their education. Nonetheless, tertiary educators have highlighted that a considerable lot of their students do not have the imperative substance and abilities to explore their initial two years of school — their utilization of the English language is feeble and their intellectual limit is underneath the normal standard. Some educators believe if students continue education in sixth form, it is a step in the right direction as it can foster maturity and prepares them to manage the workload ahead in their tertiary studies.

To discuss, this and more in our Youth Forum conversation, we have Youth Leader, Tamoy Campbell, and Lawman Lynch, Communication Strategist, and Educator.
