Everything You Need To Know Before Getting a Mammogram.

A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast that looks for changes that may be signs of breast cancer. And while we can admit, a mammogram does not sound like the most fun activity to check off your to-do list, they remain a vital part of breast health. So, here is what you need to know to get you ready.

First, it helps to know that there are two types of mammograms. The first being a screening mammogram, which is done annually as a routine precautionary check which is done when there are no known breast issues.

However, if there is an area of concern or breast symptom,  you will be required to undergo a second exam called a diagnostic mammogram. Yes, mammograms can be uncomfortable.

Compression of the breasts are done to spread breast tissue out evenly, making it easier to spot any inconsistencies and while some may find the process a bit painful, these compressions only last for a few seconds and can be adjusted to your comfort.

It also helps to schedule your mammogram to avoid the week just before your menstrual cycle, when your breasts are likely to be tender or swollen.

During the appointment, you will be required to undress above the waist. For your comfort and ease, it is recommended that you opt for skirts or pants instead of one-piece outfits or dresses.

It is also best to avoid using deodorants, antiperspirants, powders, lotions, creams or perfumes under your arms or on your breasts on the day of your appointment, as metallic particles in powders and deodorants could be visible on your mammogram and cause confusion.
