On the heels of the new Firearms Bill being passed in the house of representatives, Commissioner of Police Major General Antony Anderson is welcoming the new legislation, noting it will be a huge deterrent to illegal possession of firearms.
The bill, which was being debated in the Joint Select Committee for months, is expected to be a major tool to rid the country of illegal guns.
The police recently announced that 518 illegal guns have been seized since the beginning of the year, 54 more than last year.
Major General Anderson says people who are often found with those illegal guns are often given light sentences. With this new bill, that will change.
He also notes that many people found with an illegal firearm are given bail. He condemns this. The Firearms Bill has been sent to the Senate and will need to be passed before becoming law. More details here:
