Members of the Senate are debating whether or not to extend the State of Emergency (SOE) in sections of Jamaica. On November 14, 2021, the government declared two states of public emergency, one in the parishes of St. James, Westmoreland, and Hanover, and the other in the police divisions of St Andrew South, Kingston Western, Kingston Central, and Kingston East
In his open statement, Ministry of National Security, Senator, Mathew Samuda quoted statistics highlighting the murder rate in Jamaica. He reported that since Friday, November 12, 2021, there had been twelve hundred and forty victims of murders, and that three hundred and ninety-two (392) people were killed across the four police divisions within Kingston and St Andrew, representing 32% of the national figure.
If approved, the SEOs would continue for a three-month period, ending in February 2021.
