Residents of Little Annotto Road in Free School, Portland are breathing a sigh of relief, as a grind was built to border the river in their flood-prone community, to prevent future floods.
Stone by stone, the workmen built the grind, while residents spoke among themselves of how beneficial the border will be.
One of the men working on the grind says he is always a victim whenever there is a flood in the community. He says he’s had to start his life over several times due to flooding.
One woman tells our news team her family also lost many of their belongings in the last flood.
She says she is looking forward to being at ease whenever it rains. Meanwhile, another resident says she is relieved the work has finally been done. She says the residents are often judged because they opted to live close to the river.
The last major flood in the area was two years ago. The residents are hoping with the work done, they won’t experience another disaster.
