Months after the Director of Public Prosecutions, Paula Llewelyn filed a complaint for several breaches of professional misconduct against Defence Attorney Isat Buchanan, the General Legal Council on Saturday found Buchanan guilty of only one provision under the canon of professional ethics; speaking on a matter while it is still before the court.
The Director of Public Prosecutions complaint followed a comment made by Buchanan, in his client’s defense- incarcerated dancehall artiste Adidjah Palmer.
The attorney claimed Llewellyn was “dodgy” and “shady”, deliberately violating the constitutional rights of his client and denying him access to Palmer’s cell phone, which he believed was tampered with.
However, the General Legal Council ruled the statements were within Buchanan’s right to freedom of expression and were reasonable and in good faith.
Consequently, Cvm Live understands the attorney will not be facing disbarment or suspension, but will instead be met with a light sanction.
Meanwhile, an expert also told our news team, that when Buchanan eventually received his client’s cell phone, it was indeed tampered with.
The General Legal Council ‘s ruling follows a transfer of Buchanan’s client, Adidjah Palmer from the Horizon Adult Remand Centre back to the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre in Downtown, Kingston.
