Johnson Smith: J’cans in Cuba and Florida Safe After Storm

There are no casualties in the Jamaican community in Cuba and Florida following the passage of Hurricane Ian.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Senator Kamina Johnson-Smith told the Senate Friday, the government continues to stand in solidarity with the government and people of Cuba and the United States.

Foreign Affairs Minister Senator Kamina Johnson Smith is confirming Jamaicans in Cuba and Florida are safe and sound as hurricane Ian continues on a destructive path across the United States.

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida on Wednesday as a category 4 storm; devastating the Southwestern Coast with reports of at least twenty-one (21) deaths up to Friday.

On Tuesday it battered the western end of Cuba as a category 3 hurricane; knocking out power for eleven million people, flattening homes and destroying agricultural fields. Two people have been reported dead.

People’s National Party (PNP) President, Mark Golding on Thursday implored the government to continue to check on the welfare of Jamaican students in Cuba and urged the Prime Minister not to withhold any support they may need.

The Foreign Affairs Minister says the Jamaican embassy in Havana continues to check on the well-being of its 28 scholarship students and approximately 50 self-financed students.
