JTA Hasn’t Signed Wage Deal, More Concerns Abound

President of the Jamaica Teachers Association, Lasonja Harrison brought to the forefront issues plaguing schools locally at the Portland Teacher’s Association semi-annual meeting recently.

The Jamaica Teacher’s Association President told stakeholders the only union bargaining for teachers is the Jamaica Teacher’s Association adding there are several concerns yet to be addressed about how teachers are treated.

Ms. Harrison also highlighted the public sector compensation review noting negotiations are still ongoing. She says the current salaries of teachers are well below livable rates.

The JTA president says the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions is not a representative for teachers, adding only the JTA negotiates for teachers.

She sought to reassure teachers that the JTA is working assiduously on the behalf of teachers. She urged them to remain steadfast as they champion for equality.
