Major Drug Bust at Ian Flemming Airport

On Friday shortly after the police launched a major operational initiative dubbed, ‘Operation Relentless II’, targeting criminals.

There was a major drug bust at the Ian Fleming Airport in St. Mary. The finding was the result of a joint operation between Counter Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch (CTOC), narcotics division in partnership with US Homeland Security, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Canadian Law Enforcement officials.

Head of Crime and Security in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, DCP Fitz Bailey says the cocaine was headed for Canada.

He notes the value is over 25 million US dollars. To date, no one has been arrested.

In the meantime, the operation relentless initiative will target the police divisions with the highest levels of violent crimes. Among the major drivers of the recent violence are ongoing conflicts among persons involved in the scamming underworld as well as internal conflicts within criminal organisations over illegal firearms and ill-gotten gains.

The operations come in anticipation of the new Firearms Act that is expected to bring tougher penalties for possession and use of illegal guns.

Police Commissioner, Major General Antony Anderson says the launch of “Operation Relentless II” follows ongoing intelligence and data analysis of the violent crimes committed in the divisions of concern.
