$1.3 Billion for Health Sector Transformation

Health Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton says the 1.3 billion dollars digital transformation of the health sector is being done under the Ministry’s health systems strengthening programme for which a contract was recently signed with Cable and Wireless Jamaica Ltd.

And while the country’s health sector has been dominated by COVID-19 concerns, Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton says there are many other areas that must continue to function in order to satisfy the needs of the population.

He says his Ministry is spending 1.3 billion dollars in streamlining the health Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure. Dr. Tufton made the announcement in Parliament on Tuesday, November 16.

Dr. Tufton says a built-in disaster recovery system and cyber security to protect patient data is also part of the upgrade. He further notes that cost savings of more than US$1.5 million on equipment and network connectivity over a three-year period is also provided by the system.

He says there will be improved access to medical services island-wide including in rural areas such as Maroon Town, St. Elizabeth, Gordon Town, St. Andrew, and Manchioneal Portland. An improved appointment system is also a critical component of the project.
