15% Reduction in All Major Crimes Since January 2022

The Police Commissioner is reporting a 15% decline in all major crimes since the start of 2022. He made the announcement at a virtual media briefing on Tuesday, where he also presented a crime round up for the year.

Commissioner of Police Major General Antony Anderson has announced a 15% reduction in all major crimes since the beginning of 2022, in comparison to last year. He says the nation has recorded 240 murders since this year, which is a 6% decline; shootings have also declined by 21%, rape by 44% robberies by 13% and break-ins, 5%.

The commissioner says the largest fraction of the murders committed were gang related and the smallest fraction were mob killings. Major General Anderson credits the joint anti-gang task force recently launched among others for this decline. He also announced of the 88 men listed as wanted in January, 17 have been apprehended by the police and are now in custody, while one was fatally shot in an altercation with the police in Westmoreland. Meanwhile, Commissioner Anderson says the police have seized a significant portion of drugs since January. He continues to urge Jamaicans to cooperate with the police, report criminals and help to rid communities of guns, gangs and gunmen.
