As part of an initiative targeted at promoting farming among youth, the Ministry of Agriculture and other agents have granted lease agreements to twenty more individuals. Roughly one hundred and fifty hopefuls applied for the lease. So far, only a total of 50 have been selected.
A partnership between the Agro-Investment Corporation, the Government of Jamaica, and the 4H Club, saw the handing over of lease agreements to an additional 20 youths. The lease agreement grants them ownership of land to start cultivation and production and reduces the hassle farmers have with land ownership.
Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Pearnel Charles Jr. Says the government is taking a comprehensive approach to make youths the participants and beneficiaries of the grow smart, eat smart campaign. He adds, the government has been promoting youth in agriculture, to encourage farming.
Chief Executive Officer of the Agro-Investment Corporation Dr. Al Powell says the youths who were selected, are passionate and eager to be part of the program, and receive assistance on their farming journey. Watch the report below:
