The National Irrigation Commission Limited (NIC) will commission into service, the little park solar pump station in St. Elizabeth which was retrofitted with a 200-kilo watt grid-tied solar photovoltaic system. This allows the pump station to self-generate 37% of the energy requirement.
Nearly 400 farmers in the breadbasket parish of St. Elizabeth will benefit from the national irrigation commission’s solar upgrade. The installation of this new service will commence in the little park community in the parish.
Speaking at the recent NIC ceremony, Agriculture Minister Audley Shaw outlined how farmers will benefit from the service.
Minister Shaw notes that with the upgrade, the NIC’s annual bill is projected to be reduced by 20 percent. In the meantime, he adds that this project will be carried out in phases.
Minister Shaw also highlights that the farmers are a mixture of men and women, and inclusive of a disabled person.
